Well, it’s that time of year again…

No. Not Christmas. Revision time. Urghhh… please insert obligatory “oh my god I’m going to fail” type remarks here. I’ll save you the details but needless to say, it’s a lot harder than I thought.

In other news… tunatic is a very coool bit of software for identifying songs. Also, I am very frustrated by how dire Internet Explorer for Windows is. If you end your HTML comments with --!> instead of --> then all of your layout gets screwed up.

Anyway back to adjoint operators…

CREEM Seminar…

Subject: Tomorrow's CREEM Seminar 4.00pm Wednesday
Is Leslie New (CREEM) with a look at public engagment of science with children. Complete with photographs of wild animals! (That is "non-humans" not "children", savage beasts though they are)

Last night I found possibly the two greatest (and geekiest) web games ever, Planarity, in which you have to create planar graphs where no edges cross and Doom Funnel Chasers which revolves around shooting balls of duck tape into black holes. Cool or what?!

In other random linkage, painting your iBook, Escher’s relativity in LEGO (Slashdotted at the moment) and a cool list of Mac freeware, including a nifty PDF editor.

weird mail

The Astrosoc e-mail account just got this:

From: Uzi Escalera
To: Osip Marlowe
Subject: Re: oar chandelier

Ten thousand, Dr. Gates, or I go to the raucous bar of my choice. You
cant do this. Certainly I can. Im now a confidential legal consultant.
Ten thousand dollars. How do you want to pay it? I cant imagine you have it

with ease what he did thirteen years ago in Paris when, under orders, he
had stalked the Jackal. It was something to think about, not dwell upon.
There were Marie and his children now-Davids wife, Davids children-and
there was nothing he could not do as long as he willed it! David Webb
was disappearing from his psyche, only the predator Jason Bourne would
remain. He was through! He crawled inside and stood up, instinctively,
rapidly checking his equipment with the fingers of both hands. Weapons:
an automatic, as well as a CO2 dart pistol; Zeiss Ikon binoculars; a
scabbarded hunting knife. They were all the predator needed, for he was
now behind the lines in enemy territory, the enemy that would lead him
to Carlos. Medusa. The bastard battalion from Vietnam, the un-logged,

Very, very strange…

best facebook group **EVER**

I just found the “We Love Dr Olsen” group on facebook, it’s great. Some classic quotes (some of which I was present for).

“Ze course won’t ever be taught in this way again, Frank Schmidt is retiring. Maybe this means people in the future will be able to do vectors and hyperbolics by the end of the course.”
<Round of applause from a packed lecture theatre A.>

“You can abbreviate mathematical terms up to 10 times. If you do it an 11th time, you will go directly to hell.”

“Of course, since you’re mathematicians, you should all write “log n” as opposed to “LN n”. Don’t let your boyfriend or girlfriend catch you writing “LN”. I had a girlfriend once, a physicist who wrote “LN”. We broke up. It wasn’t because of that”
<Pause, class titters.>
“Well, maybe it was.”

My mother always warned me against two things: Women of a certain virtue and never divide by zero!
