post from YAPC::EuropeWell, I’m here! The first day was very cool, particularly Leopold Tötsch and Alison Randal’s Parrot talks as well as Marty Pauley’s hilarious talk on Lisp and it’s relation to Perl 6. I’m currently sitting in a talk by Jon Allen about using Excel from the command line using perl, more in his website here. |
After DF CampWell, I’m back from DF Camp. Despite the amount of stupid, hectic wranglings involving equipment, people and trains I think that the event was a success. My high piont had to be my meal with Charlie and Nick. Our last event together, we went to a pub around the corner from the site and ate and drank very well (to the tune of £110) then headed back to camp. We got back to find that the site was unusually dark, which was odd. We went to the kitchen tent, there was no one there… We went to the fire, there was no one there… We went to the marquee, there was no one there… Finally we went to Jeff’s van (where I slept for the whole week.) Inside there were some people, Jeff, in terrified tones, whispered “bad people came!” Then, suddenly out of the trees, some 200 meters away cam a scream. It was people running toward us. Charlie quickly shouted “to Nick’s car!” We ran and ran to the car, but did not make it in time. We realised once they started tickling us, that it was all of camp, some 40 people, who had hidden from us. They had rang the pub we were in to get them to tell us when we left so they could all hide. I was both terrified and proud that everyone had done this just for us. I’m going to see DJ Shadow on Sunday, which should be awesome, then I’m off to YAPC::Europe on Tuesday, so if you’re in Birmingham this week give me a shout. |
Post Global Village Post…Wow! The past three weeks have been like no other. I can’t even begin to describe the things that have gone on in detail. However, we (the Media Centre team) did succeed in having 24 hour radio (4 hour repeats), 1/2 hour of TV, a daily newspaper and an up-to-date website from camp. There was a lot blood (Nick’s mainly), sweat (everyones) and tears (everyones) put into the project and I have to say that despite having days that I’d rather not relive, I think that we really did a great job. You can see what we did at the Global Village 2006 website. Highlights include Richard and I going to what basically constituted an arms fair to pick up a tent, Nick injuring himself every day, putting beer in what we thought was a fridge (but was infact a heater), getting the first newspaper run, going to Little Chef on the last day for brunch and being thoroughly embarrased by Julie Thorpe by being thanked personally (and in far too much depth) at the staff party. Press coverage was pretty good, I’ve not catalogued it all but two nice reports are at Society Guardian and co-operatives UK news. In geeky news, I finally met Meinhard who, along with Matt host this site. I also have aquired a new PC (Semperon 3100+, 1GB RAM, blahblah) which is 64-bit which takes a little getting used to. And finally, I saw a really nice bit of geeky news: a Firefox crop circle. |
