Belated blogging…

Well, I’ve almost finished my first week back. Third year is going well so far, although I think it’s going to get very very hard very very fast. My cleaner rules, she just gave me a kettle! Those who enjoy the greatest Playstation 2 game ever may well enjoy this insurance advert (via bb). Also, I finally found the source of the quote on Len’s door:

“I reached the place of our bivouac by sunset and drinking much mate, soon made up my bed for the night. The wind was very strong and cold, but I never slept more comfortably.”
–Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle, 1936

uncool things about hall #1: fire

6:30am is not a fun time. Not at all. I have now been up for 1.5 hours. This is not very fun. Anyhow, I will stop moaning, at least it wasn’t raining.

I woke up to find this set of instant messages:

(00:22:13) Nick Edwards: man i'm too addicted to openttd
(00:22:40) Nick Edwards: i’ve just spent the past hour reading the forums to look at improved
station entrance/exit design

Link wise: Random Acts of Reality is the bog of the ambulance driver Tom Reynolds who appeared on Radio 4 this week reading from the book taken from this blog. It’s sometimes grim, sometimes funny stuff. Worth a read at least.

Also, I found (via digg) an interesting piece about what programmers actually spend their time doing if you ignore the pie chart, it’s quite a good read.

Finally, I’ve been spending a bit of time playing around with the feeds and APIs over at BBC Backstage which has some very neat stuff.

But now…. breakfast!

2-4-6-8 time for me to matriculate!

Yes, there are too many syllables. No, I don’t care.

Anyway, I’m back in St Andrews. I’ve moved into Hall and have just matriculated in my third year. This is going pretty quickly. For those interested I am sitting the following modules:

MT3503 - Complex Analysis
MT3504 - Differential Equations
MT3606 - Statistical Methods
PH3075 - Applied Vector Calculus
PH3061 - Quantum Mechanics 1
MT4608 - Sampling Theory

Dan’s dreams are worrying me:

(16:01:39) Dark Side Dave: eek
(16:01:47) coup, anyone?: i know
(16:01:51) Dark Side Dave: did I go heroically?
(16:02:07) coup, anyone?: no you just slipped away during dinner
(16:02:45) Dark Side Dave: I guess I wouldn't want to cause a fuss
(16:06:23) coup, anyone?: well you certainly didnt apparently i didnt notice for ten minutes,
the waitor noticed it, pointed it out, and the woman in front of me, i think she was from

(16:06:27) coup, anyone?: ten whole minutes ago

Finally, some links: Vince’s new movie, Breathing Earth and Google Fight!

some linkage and a long awaited posting…

Well, it’s taken a while, but fianlly I’m posting again. Since last time I have been to a DF Forum, I’ve also been to London for a little while, a General Council meeting had Elle come visit the North. Some photos from London can be found here. I’m currently back to working on things for CREEM, as well as one or two bits and peices for Woodcraft.

As for some links… Google have a nice music trends for Google Talk users page setup, modern tarot cards, a YouTube mashup of Monty Python and Halo, a redesign of Penguin classics and how colour blind people (like me!) see user interfaces. Finally, I found a quick howto on getting your Google Calendar imported into Kontact.

Phew! Right, now back to debugging fortran…

mmmmmore geekery…

In other news, contextual network graphs (pdf) is an interesting way of searching and is related to the below post. mightyv is a nice, perl-y way of looking at news. Something is definately wrong with the physics in this article. I’m currently at lightening talks and just saw an awesome talk from CL about jifty which looks like a serious competitor for Ruby on Rails and Catalyst. Finally, some Conference Photos.
